President-elect Donald Trump took to social media to mock Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in his latest jab toward the leader.
Trump was weighing in on the resignation of Canada’s finance minister, which sent shockwaves through the country on Monday as Trudeau faces another key political test to stay in power. Trump met with Trudeau last month after the president-elect announced his intention to impose a 25 percent tax on all Canadian products entering the U.S.
But as Trudeau faces calls to step down, Trump took the chance to troll the leader even further by calling Canada a “state” and labeling Trudeau as a “governor.”
“The Great State of Canada is stunned as the Finance Minister resigns, or was fired, from her position by Governor Justin Trudeau. Her behavior was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
This is not the first time he belittled the Canadian prime minister. Shortly after meeting with Trudeau last month, Trump referred to him as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.”
Trump also criticized the former finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, while renegotiating the free trade deal with Canada and Mexico during his first term in office. He said at the time that he and his team did not “like their representative very much,” referring to Freeland.
Trudeau swiftly named longtime ally and close friend Dominic LeBlanc, the pubic safety minister who recently joined him at dinner with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, to replace Freeland. Freeland did not make that trip.
After being sworn in, LeBlanc told reporters he and Trudeau are focused on the cost of living facing Canadians and on finding common ground with Trump on border security and economic issues.
“It’s not been an easy day,” Trudeau later told a room of party supporters. He called it one of his party’s “toughest days” but he did not say what he planned to do.
