Light snow is in the forecast for New Jersey on Friday with a dusting to an inch expected in most areas ahead of what will be a frigid weekend, forecasters said Thursday.
Though northwest New Jersey could receive 2 to 3 inches of accumulation, any snow that falls will be very light elsewhere and might mix with rain because temps will be above freezing until nighttime, the National Weather Service said.
Areas south and east of Interstate 95 should receive mainly rain except for a brief changeover to snow at night.
All snow will have moved out by Saturday morning.
The weekend will be sunny but quite chilly with highs on Saturday — the first day of winter — only in the 20s to low 30s in northern New Jersey and the mid to upper 30s further south and east. Overnight lows will plunge into the teens as “expansive area of arctic pressure” moves in to our area, the weather service said in its morning forecast discussion.
Sunday will be even colder with highs not making it out of the 20s before the coldest night in months. Overnight lows Sunday night into Monday will drop into the single digits in northwestern New Jersey and the Pine Barrens while dipping into the teens in urban areas.
Monday will be frosty too, with temperatures struggling to climb above the freezing mark.
By Christmas Eve on Tuesday, temps will moderate a bit and be in the mid- to upper-30s in most spots.
There’s a slight chance of light snow on Christmas night.
