A set of bridges that haven’t gotten the same attention as the massive Portal North Bridge replacement, but are just as critical for the Gateway Tunnel project, are on the road to retirement, Amtrak officials said.
The four 117-year-old “Sawtooth” bridges in Kearny that carry Northeast Corridor mainline tracks over NJ Transit’s Morris & Essex lines and PATH tracks are up for replacement as one of the Gateway Program phase II projects.
A “milestone” was reached by selecting Skanska, Walsh & Herzog Joint Venture to do pre-construction work in the bridge replacements, which could lead to future contract opportunities for the project’s full construction, Amtrak officials said Thursday.
