EDISON, New Jersey (WABC) — Crews are working to repair a large water main break that occurred overnight on Thursday in Edison, New Jersey.
Edison Mayor Sam Joshi says a 20-inch water main broke at 2505 Woodbridge Avenue around midnight.
The mayor says the water main break is impacting residents and businesses, roughly 20,000 customers, along Woodbridge Avenue, Route 27 and areas up to Talmadge Road, which enters into the center and northern part of town.
Those who are impacted currently have little to no water pressure.
Mayor Joshi says Edison Water and Sewer Utility and emergency contractor crews are in the process of isolating the break before they can make repairs.
He says crews have to dig into the ground to fix the break. There are also valves that need to be shut off.
Officials say some of the pipes date back 80 years, and that cold weather conditions likely played a role in the break.
Mayor Joshi said repairs could take at least a few hours, at minimum, and they are “hoping to get through it as soon as they possibly can, and hopefully today.”
