The last weekend of 2024 could include a mix of unsettled weather in New Jersey with the chance for freezing rain Friday night to start a soggy weekend that could end with thunderstorms Sunday night.
The National Weather Service is calling for 30 to 50% chance of freezing rain and the potential for icing north of I-195. The forecast depends on how early the precipitation starts Friday night into early Saturday.
“A big warming trend is on the way for Saturday and Sunday, so any freezing rain early Saturday morning should change over to all rain quickly after sunrise,” the weather service said early Thursday. “Off and on periods of rain are possible through the rest of the weekend.”
Ahead of the rain, Thursday and Friday are expected to be dry and tranquil with normal temperatures for this time of year in the upper 30s and low 40s.
The weekend won’t be a washout with some lulls in the rain as temperatures rise into the 40s and near 50 degrees in some spots on Saturday.
Rain continues on Sunday with even warmer temperatures into the 50s and low 60s.
Temperatures “may be warm enough for embedded thunderstorms Sunday night just ahead of the cold front that is expected to sweep through on Monday morning,” the weather service’s New Jersey office said in its forecast.
Thunderstorms this time of year would be “very unusual,” the weather service said.
The outlook for New Year’s Eve on Tuesday also looks wet for those planning outdoor activities.
“There can be a storm that arrives New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day that has the potential to produce a mix of rain and snow for the Northeast, with all rain farther south,” AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok said. “Rain could arrive before the ball drops in Times Square, but the timing of that remains in flux and something we will continue to monitor.”
