Freezing rain across the northern half of New Jersey late Friday into Saturday could leave a dangerous coating of ice on roads and walkways, forecasters say.
The National Weather Service’s office in Mount Holly has issued a winter weather advisory from 7 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday for Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties.
“Be prepared for slippery roads,” the weather service said Thursday night. “Leave some extra time if you plan on traveling on Saturday morning.”
While similar conditions are expected in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties, no advisories had been issued as of 8 p.m. Thursday by the New York weather service office that provides forecasts for those five counties.
Temperatures Friday night will be in the upper 20s to low 30s.
“Nighttime travel could become slippery and hazardous as a result, especially along bridges, overpasses, other untreated roadways, and untreated sidewalks,” the weather service said.
Any ice that forms, however, should not last long. High temperatures Saturday are expected to rise into 40s and 50s with occasional showers.
Heavier rain arrives on Sunday with temperatures jumping to the 50s and 60s, as well as the potential for thunderstorms.
