A broken window greeted patrons at Gate 1’s ticket booth so Joan Borke, an 87-year-old widow, entered the 171-year-old Freehold Raceway from the entry on Park Avenue Saturday.
She leaned on a metal cane with her left hand and carried a black handbag decorated with a royal flush in sequins in her right. She eyed the escalators. One was off with caution tape around it. The other worked. She weighed the odds on her best bet to make it inside for the final day of racing at the track she had come to for a half century.
