Last week, Gleyber Torres’ career-long stint with the Yankees officially came to an end when he signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers.
And it appears that a reunion between the second baseman and the Yankees, whom he debuted with in 2018, was never a consideration.
During his introductory Zoom call with the Tigers, Torres told reporters that the Yankees showed no interest in him this offseason.
“After the World Series, I got a lot of phone calls from other teams and just focused to get an opportunity in another place,” Torres said. “I feel like I have to play where somebody wants to give the best for me, and I just want to be available to do the best for the team.
”I’ve got great friends there, great communication with the entire organization. I feel proud of myself for being with the Yankees for seven years, but now I’m with Detroit and just really happy they gave me the opportunity to play next year.”
Torres, 28, has spent all seven years of his career in New York. He profiled as a breakout star in the 2019 season when he hit 38 home runs in 144 games, and since then has had a .261/.332/.411 slash line.
Torres’ one-year deal with Detroit is worth $15 million.
