Forecasters from AccuWeather have issued their first snowfall projections for New Jersey for a large storm system moving across the nation on Monday that could drop 3 to 6 inches of snow on the southern half of the state.
The forecast also calls for 1 to 3 inches in the central and north-central regions.
That would be on top of the light coating of snow that’s expected from a different storm system late Friday into early Saturday morning.

The Friday storm could bring 1 to 2 inches of snow to the southern counties of the Garden State, and less than an inch in Ocean, Burlington and Atlantic counties, according to the National Weather Service’s latest snow forecast.
The weather service hasn’t yet issued any official predictions for Monday’s potential snow in New Jersey, but says if the storm takes a more northern track, up to 4 inches of snow is possible.
UPDATE: The National Weather Service says “snowfall accumulations, with potentially significant amounts greater than 4 inches within a narrow band near or south of the Philadelphia metro (area), could lead to snow-covered roads and difficult travel Sunday night through Monday.”
AccuWeather says the snow that ends up in New Jersey on Monday will be part of a “massive winter storm” that will get organized off the West Coast of the U.S. and is expected to “bring snow and ice across a 1,500-mile-long zone from the Plains and Mississippi Valley to the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic, starting late Saturday night (in areas west of New Jersey) through early next week.”
“There is a risk of widespread power outages and major travel impacts,” AccuWeather forecaster Bernie Rayno said.
Because the storm is still several days away, the National Weather Service says it has “‘low confidence (20-30%) on exact amounts for any given area, however confidence has increased (60-80%) that much of the area near and south of I-78 will experience at least a few inches of accumulating snowfall.”
Before the Sunday-Monday storm hits the eastern region, New Jersey will be hit by a blast of Arctic air this weekend, with daytime temperatures stuck in the low 30s and overnight lows dropping into the low 20s — and gusty winds making it feel even colder.
