The first of two snowstorms is expected to drop a coating to 2 inches of snow on southern New Jersey Friday afternoon and evening before attention turns to a second more powerful winter storm that could include widespread snowfall accumulations Monday.
The National Weather Service has not yet issued a snow forecast map for the Monday storm, but noted that snowfall totals are likely to be in the 2 to 4 inch range with some banding of snow that remains difficult to predict a few days out.
“There is still too much variability in the model guidance to paint a picture of exactly where the highest impacts of the winter storm will end up impacting however confidence is fairly high in at least some accumulating snowfall for the region,” the weather service said in its Friday morning forecast discussion.
AccuWeather’s early forecast map for the Monday storm calls for 3 to 6 inches of snow across southern New Jersey with 1 to 3 inches south of I-80 and through central counties.
The increasing confidence in accumulating snow means a likely slippery Monday morning commute and possibly more slick roads into the evening.
For those in southern New Jersey counties, the Friday evening commute is also likely to be a mess with slushy roads even in areas with low snowfall totals, the weather service said.
A winter weather advisory for Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties runs from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Areas along the Atlantic City Expressway and around Philadelphia could see the higher end of the snowfall totals.
Rain and snow showers are expected south of Interstate 78.
Temperatures on Friday will range from the 30s to low 40s before dropping into the low to mid 20s overnight.
Saturday will be sunny and blustery with highs only in the low 30s. It will feel like it’s in the teens and 20s though, due to winds of 15 to 20 mph that gust as high as 30 mph. Sunday will be sunny with similar temps but lighter winds.
