EAST RUTHERFORD – Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll are returning for a fourth year with the New York Giants to complete the job they were hired to do.
The Giants’ general manager and head coach met with co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch separately and laid out a vision for where they believe the team must go next to take a step toward respectability and ultimately consistent contention for the playoffs.
Mara released a statement Monday morning:
“Now that this season is over, we felt it necessary to make this statement,” it reads.
“Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will continue in their respective roles with the organization. As disappointing as the results of the season have been, Steve [Tisch] and I remain confident in the process that Joe and Brian have implemented and their vision for our team.
“We look forward to the future and achieving the results we all desire.”
There had been speculation regarding their job security from the early weeks of this season in some circles. Instead of celebrating the 100th season in Giants history, the team spent much of the campaign trying to avoid perceived ineptitude and embarrassment during a 3-14 campaign that wound up as one of the worst it has ever had.
The Giants are 18-32-1 in the three years since Schoen and Daboll were hired, and their arrival was widely praised.
A rebuild like the one the Giants needed after the 2021 season was bound to be messy, however.
The fact that it didn’t start out that way two years ago when Daboll and Schoen got here has been overshadowed greatly by what has transpired since. Whether that’s fair or unfair doesn’t seem to matter to many observers, yet what mattered most is through what lens Mara and Tisch viewed the current circumstances.
More to come on this developing story.
