“Who’s doing rides?”
“Doing rides all day.”
“I have $40; I need a ride ASAP.”
These are common messages in multiple Rochester Facebook groups where people request and offer rideshare services outside of the Lyft or Uber apps to avoid surging prices and fees that cut into drivers’ revenue. (The issue is widespread across the country.)
Chatter in these Facebook groups suggests that, despite Uber introducing several initiatives to improve earnings for its drivers, many are concerned the overall increase in fares has not fully translated to higher pay. Some drivers report the ride-sharing apps take more than 50% of their fares.
Rideshare companies:Uber, Lyft drivers fight for higher pay, better protections
Three key factors determine Uber drivers’ earnings: trip fares, promotions offering extra cash and tips from riders.
- Earnings vary by region, city and driving conditions. Fares are calculated based on ride time and distance and may include a base fare in some cities.
- Additionally, drivers can participate in promotional opportunities to earn more.
- In February 2024, Uber released its results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2023. Following the release, drivers in New York City protested low wages and lockouts.
We contacted several drivers offering rides in these Facebook groups, but none were willing to speak on the record.
While some drivers have found a workaround by offering rides independently, safety concerns have arisen regarding booking rides with drivers who have not undergone a verification process.
Uber and Lyft drivers must pass verification and background checks before starting work. They are also required to follow the companies’ community guidelines and safety programs to protect riders.
