Neil Cavuto, a longtime host on Fox News, is leaving the network.
The anchor, who joined the channel at its inception 28 years ago, had criticized and fact-checked Donald Trump, who lashed out against him on social media.
Cavuto, 66, a Long Island native, has made New Jersey his home, living in Mendham as well as Chester, Somerset and Nutley over the years.
He hosted three shows — “Your World with Neil Cavuto,” “Cavuto Live” on Saturdays and “Cavuto: Coast to Coast” on Fox Business Network.
Cavuto gave his final signoff Thursday after hosting “Your World,” the show he started anchoring in 1996.
“This is it,” he said. “The final segment. But today I also wanted to let you know this is my final show. I’m leaving Fox. I’ve been planning this day for some time. This just seemed like a good time. Now, some of you might be thinking ‘well, Neil, it’s about time.’ After all, I’ve been doing this for nearly three decades here. You know, there are people working with me now who weren’t even born when I started at Fox. That’s how old I am. But I’m not leaving journalism, I’m just leaving here. But I’m forever grateful to my bosses here. They’ve been very good to me these many years and offered a very generous opportunity for me to stay years more. That’s pretty amazing considering the fact that, I don’t know, I might’ve missed a day or two here and there battling everything from multiple sclerosis and COVID to countless infections, even open-heart surgery.”
“I got to do what I love to do — report the news,” Cavuto said. “Not shout the news, not blast the news … not, well, call names. Just call balls and strikes, following the news to hold truth to power in fairness to all. That’s it, that’s me.”
Trump, sure enough, had a reaction to Cavuto’s exit, which he shared on his social media platform Truth Social:
“GOOD NEWS FOR AMERICA!” the incoming president said. “Neil Cavuto, the Lowest Rated Anchor on Fox, by far, is leaving – Should have happened a long time ago!”
Before joining Fox News in 1996, Cavuto was an anchor at CNBC, hosting shows like “Market Wrap.”
Fox News Media said in a statement that Cavuto’s “illustrious career has been a master class in journalism and we’re extremely proud of his incredible 28-year run” with the company.
“His programs have defined business news and set the standard for the entire industry. We wish him a heartfelt farewell and all the best on his next chapter.”
