The Chicago White Sox are hiring Phil Nevin to be a special assistant in their player development department, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
According to Nightengale, Nevin will be involved in a number of player development roles, which will include amateur scouting for the 2025 Draft.
The White Sox finished 2024 with a 41-121 record, setting the Modern Era record for losses in a season.
Nevin sat out of the 2024 campaign after the Los Angeles Angels did not bring him back as manager following a disappointing 2023 season. He was a top candidate for the open Padres’ managerial job last winter that ultimately went to Mike Shildt.
Nevin joined the Angeles as their third base coach after the 2021 season and was named interim manager after the firing of Joe Maddon. Nevin was brought back without the interim title the following year.
He spent 2018-21 with the Yankees as the team’s third base coach.
As a player, Nevin had a 12-year major league career across seven organizations, slashing .270/.343/.472. In 2001, he got an All-Star nod and earned MVP consideration after batting .306 with a .976 OPS.
