Another one of the Rangers’ core pieces will be missing in action for the foreseeable future.
On Tuesday, the team placed forward Chris Kreider (upper body) on injured reserve retroactive to Sunday.
Players on IR have to miss a minimum of seven days. The Rangers are scheduled to play three games over that stretch with home games against Dallas (Tuesday) and New Jersey (Thursday) and a road game against Vegas on Saturday.
In 34 games this season, Kreider has 13 goals and two assists. Now the Rangers’ longest-tenured player, Kreider did not play last Sunday when the Rangers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 6-2. He also missed three games in November due to back spasms.
Matt Rempe returns to Rangers
In a corresponding move, the Rangers called up Matt Rempe, who was sent down to Hartford on Monday when Arthur Kaliyev got claimed off waivers. Rempe still needs to sit out one more game after being suspended eight games for boarding and elbowing Dallas’ Miro Heiskanen back on Dec. 20.
Goalie Igor Shesterkin was placed on IR last week, but did join the team on the ice at Tuesday’s morning skate.
