A brick colonial mansion in Montclair, dating back to 1890, looks traditional from the outside.
When you enter, you’re greeted with gleaming hardwood floors and a fantastic staircase. But as you make your way toward the back of the home, there’s a very modern addition – a massive room with an indoor pool.
“It’s a really amazing house‚“ said Cristian Perez, who listed the home along with Tony Verducci of Serhant Real Estate, the real estate firm founded by Ryan Serhant, who starred on Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing and currently is on Netflix’s Owning Manhattan.
The eight-bedroom, eight full- and one half-bathroom home is listed for $6,750,000.
The home was originally listed for sale in February 2024 for $7,499,000 by a different real estate agency. Perez and Verducci got the listing in October and have kept it exclusive, for now.
“With larger estates like this, it’s not always an exact science when you’re pricing them,“ Perez said. ”The first one was a shot in the dark. After a few months on the market there’s usually a slight readjustment in price.”
The median sales price of a home in Montclair was $1,300,000 in November, according to the most current data available from New Jersey Realtors.
The home, known as Daybreak, sits on 1.46 acres in a neighborhood in Montclair that’s within walking distance to downtown shops, restaurants and train service to Manhattan.
The current owners replaced electrical and mechanical systems, redid the facade and added the indoor pool, Perez said.
The indoor pool is housed in a room with two-story tall ceilings and triple-pane accordion doors so that in the summer it feels more like an outdoor pool.
The pool area is fully contained. “Usually when you have indoor pools, the house can smell like chlorine,” he said. “When they put this in, they installed a dehumidification system … and the pool is not chlorinated, it’s mineral water. So that also helps with any odors.”
The pool itself is 40 feet by 20 feet and an adjacent spa seats eight.
“A lot of … indoor pools are usually in the basement, they’re in a dilapidated state or the whole house smells like chlorine,“ Perez said. ”This one is truly, truly special.”
The home is also suited for entertaining with a great room, a formal dining room that seats 16 and a gourmet kitchen with a butler’s pantry.
“When we initially listed the house, we had a huge unveiling,” Perez said. “At the event we had 184 agents and it felt like there was still quite a bit of room.”
All eight bedrooms are ensuite and have fireplaces. They are located on the second floor – which has year-round views of New York City. The primary suite is a former garden porch with large windows and an ensuite that has a soaking tub for two.
The property also includes a four-car garage with custom Mahogany doors, an electric car charger and a self-contained carriage house with an apartment that has a kitchen and bathroom.
The driveway even has a snow melt system.
The buyer of the home will likely be someone who is looking for an indoor pool and a substantial home.
“I think it will most likely be a move-up buyer who already lives in Montclair,” he said. “There aren’t many houses in this shape at this price point.”
The home also made it to the small screen when it was featured as a location for HBO’s Sopranos. In Season 1, episode 11, the Mountain Avenue home was depicted as a brothel.
