Former New York Mets manager and Rutgers Hall of Famer Jeff Toborg died Sunday. He was 83. The news was first announced by the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Torborg was a New Jersey baseball legend from Union County and Rutgers University. The Westfield and All-State catcher at Westfield High went on to set a Rutgers and NCAA record with a .540 batting average during an All-America 1963 season.
Torborg was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and enjoyed a 10-year career in Major League Baseball, where he caught three no-hitters – including Sandy Koufax’s perfect game. Following his playing career, Torborg managed for five MLB teams, including the Mets, and coached for 10 more in the New York Yankees organization.
