NEW YORK – In two minor moves to add pitching depth before camp opens, the Yankees claimed right-handers Roansy Contreras and Allan Winans off waivers.
It’s a return to the Yankees organization for Contreras, originally signed as an international free agent and sent to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the January 2021 trade for Jameson Taillon.
In 2016, Contreras was rated the top Dominican pitching prospect for that year’s international signing period by Baseball America.
Contreras, 25, was claimed off waivers Thursday from the Baltimore Orioles, after splitting the 2024 season between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Angels.
In 49 games (three starts) in 2024, Contreras (2-4 record, two saves) posted a 4.35 ERA, with 56 strikeouts and 31 walks in 68.1 innings. He owns a 4.72 ERA in parts of four MLB seasons (90 games, 33 starts).
